The Calne Aquathlon Series is a relaxed, friendly event which is suitable for beginners but also excellent early season practise for experienced triathletes.

We aim to provide a good experience and so keep the numbers in each lane to a minimum in the swim and have a flat, fast and well signed course. The numbers are restricted by pool availability and the event does sell out quickly so please book early.

To register please enter via the BTF website here:

https://www.britishtriathlon.org/events/search?event_name=calne&month=&competitor_type=&within=&location=

Your entry will be acknowledged as accepted as soon as we receive it.  You will then be sent race details approximately a week prior to the event when the swim waves have been determined.  You then pick up race number on the day as part of registration.

Calne Aquathlon Spring Series 2019 – Race Brief

Thank you for entering the GO TRI Calne Aquathlon Spring Series 2019 – Races take place on Sunday 3rd Feb, 3rd Mar and 10th Apr. 2019  The aim is to provide a relaxed and friendly event with a competitive edge!!

The sprint event is a 400m pool swim followed by a 5km run.- the super sprint is a 250m swim followed by a 3k run.  The events will be run together so if you decide you want to do longer than entered then just tell us and we can change.  We want you to get teh most out of the event so try to be as flexible as possible.

For those who have taken part in one of these events before, there is no change to the run route, pool swim process or transition.  However, please note that you do not have to be at poolside for 10:00 for the briefing – just be ready at the pool for your swim – 10 mins before your start.  We are going to flexi-start to keep things moving so when your lane is empty you can start.

  1. Registration takes place at Calne Leisure Centre, White Horse Way, Calne, Wiltshire, SN11 0SP, and registration will be open from 9:15 a.m. Car parking is available at the Leisure Centre and is free of charge for the duration of your visit.
  2. Key actions on arrival:
    • Pick up number from registration (this will be the desk in front of the Leisure Centre)
    • Read the briefing information at the registration desk
    • Place kit in transition
    • Change and be at poolside 10 mins before indicated start time
  3. At registration you will collect your race number and directed to transition for you to put your running kit out. You can wear a race belt or pin your number to tee shirt (pins are provided). Please wear your number on your front to aid with split timing.
  4. Your individual start times are published on the web site and sent by email. There are 6 waves at 10:05 and 10:15 and 10:25, 10:30, 10:35 and 10:45 which are streamed to put similar capability swimmers together.  Note that after wave 2 lanes are started individually to ensure that we utilise the pool efficiently so the waves may seem short but that is because not all lanes are included in each wave.
  5. There is NO mass poolside briefing or before each wave. Please be at the poolside 10 minutes before your wave time and we will start you when your lane becomes free.  There are course details on the web site and briefing cards at registration.  Please familiarise yourself with the route and pool routine.  It is straightforward – with 2 per lane there should be no swimming issues and the route is well signed and marshalled.  If you are unsure then please ask one of the race officials.  We are all here to help.
  6. Toilets and changing facilities are available in the Leisure centre where the swim takes place. Transition and the finish are adjacent to the pool building which is excellent for supporters.
  7. The running course route is well marked with marshals at key points. The route is a simple out and back route towards Heddington and return.  There is a marshal at the turn point and at key road junctions.
  8. The route is NOT traffic free so please be aware of traffic. It is not a busy road but please do not take chances.  Do NOT use earphones of any type whilst on the road – it’s dangerous and unnecessary.
  9. The weather conditions are usually chilly so please dress appropriately for the conditions. The route is completely paved road so normal running shoes are appropriate.
  10. There is water available at the finish. If you do need any additional support on the route, then contact a marshal.
  11. Once finished you can use the changing facilities of the sports centre and there is a comfortable lounge area and vending machines for hot and cold drinks and snacks.
  12. Prizes – there are no prizes awarded for individual races. However, all performances will be counted towards the overall series winners which will be awarded after the April race.

Some advice for those new to Aquathlon and Multisport Events

Aquathlons are an excellent way to start with multisport or to develop your existing skills as swimming, running and transition disciplines are important aspects of triathlon.  The format for this race is simple – a 400m (16 length) swim in the pool followed by a short run outside to the transition area to start a 5km run.

You can wear what you want for the swim and run.  If you have a tri suit, then this is ideal as you can swim and run without additional clothing – although you may wish to add a top layer if its chilly! Alternatively, you can swim in a costume and then put on a top, shorts and running shoes in transition.  Of course, you can add jackets, tights or other apparel if you want – however, the clock is ticking so don’t lose too many of those hard-won seconds from the swim leg whilst you make yourself beautiful!  Also make sure that any jackets or long tights are easy to get on over wet arms and legs!

There are some safety rules regarding swimming in the pool which will be fully explained in the pre-race brief and quite simple.  With regards transition please remember the following:

  • Transition is for athletes only – no helpers, family, or pets.
  • Keep you kit neat and in your area and not strewn around
  • No nudity – you must remain covered at all times and males must wear a top which does not show an expanse of chest whilst running (although in the winter this is probably not an issue!!)
  • Do not interfere with other people’s kit – don’t impede others who will be changing nearby
  • Obey the marshals – they are looking out for your safety
  • No electronic devices in transition – update Facebook when you have finished and in the café ……

But most of all take it steady – don’t panic and enjoy the event.

Spring 2019 Entry as at 31st Dec 2018

As you know I have been optimistic in holding the first race in the Calne Aquathlon series this Sunday (3rd Feb).  However, after consultation with the race officials and physically running the route I have made the decision to cancel the event.

Although the snow is gradually melting, there is still a Yellow warning continuing up to Sunday 11:00 for extreme low temperatures.  With the compacted snow and ice on the course the risk of very slippery running conditions is significant.  As we are using public roads, we have been advised that it would therefore be unwise to continue.

Those who know me will testify that to be beaten by the weather goes against the grain but the last thing we want is to start anyone’s season with a strain or break – so this time caution prevails.

The Blue Planet Triathlon ethos is that if you can’t compete you don’t pay so we are happy to transfer to the rearranged Feb event, another of the series events on 3rd Mar or 14th Apr or refund your entry for the event.

I am meeting with the Wiltshire Council facilities manager on Monday to see if we can get pool time for a replacement event and/or summer events(s) – so I will keep you posted.

Once again I do apologise for any disappointment this has caused.

Any queries please contact me directly.
